Satterlee Stephens won affirmance of the dismissal of a defamation action brought against its client, Newsmax Media, Inc. (“Newsmax”), from the California Court of Appeal. The action, which sought in excess of $33 million in damages, was brought against Newsmax by actor Andrew Keegan. It was based on a Newsmax article regarding the Los Angeles Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control’s raid on a spiritual center Mr. Keegan co-founded. The action had been dismissed by the trial court under California’s anti-SLAPP statute. The California Court of Appeal affirmed the dismissal in its entirety. Newsmax was represented in the matter by Satterlee Stephens Partners Mark Lerner and Michael Cabin.
